The Man Who Beat the Bruiser
Before I was even born, my grandfather was already a legend.
He used to get mysterious phone calls at home — ‘Is this Ted Jordan?’

‘Yep.’

Be down at Stubbles bar by 4:30.
That’s all it took. No names. No context. Just a challenge. He’d show up in his work clothes or church clothes — didn’t matter — and leave with another win under his belt. These weren’t friendly matches. These were arm-wrestling duels. Word had spread that if you wanted to prove yourself, you had to go through Ted Jordan.
Then one day, the call wasn’t from some local loudmouth — it was from Dick the Bruiser. A real-deal pro wrestler with a reputation for tearing up bars and opponents. He’d heard about ‘the guy to beat’ — and came to see if the stories were true.
What he found was my grandfather, sipping black coffee, calm as ever. One hand on the mug, the other waiting on the table.

They locked arms.
And just like every other challenger, Dick the Bruiser left humbled.
My grandfather didn’t need to shout, flex, or brag. He just was.
Now he’s 93. A Korean War veteran. Still sharp. Still stubborn. Still trying to rake leaves during a windstorm because, and I quote, “The wind’s already helping.” These days, I use eufy cameras to keep an eye on him. Not because he’s weak — because he’s the kind of strong that never asks for help, even when it should. The kind of man who looked after everyone for decades — and now, it’s our turn to look after him.
I joke with him sometimes that he might still get drafted, since the Korean War never technically ended. He just smirks and says, ‘Then I hope you’ve been lifting. You’re carrying my boots.’
That’s my grandfather.
No cape. No spotlight. Just a quiet superpower of showing up, standing firm, and teaching generations how to be strong without ever raising his voice…
