Hi, well it could also have been a mouse. Their paws are similar to a 
which also have claws/fingernails, but smaller in size.
Why both would climb up there? Basically to gain entry into your home…
Mice and raccoons like dark and warm areas like attics during the day, nesting spot, give birth. They’re nocturnal creatures.
Perform a visual inspection around your homes eaves / soffits for any damage / torn _access holes to your attic a raccoon may have made or is attempting to.
I always do a visual inspection every 2 months or so.
