How much need is there for rain protection on the doorbells?
Previous Ring doorbells have failed due to what seemed like water damage.
Is it worth building a protective cover?

Had my doorbell a couple of years not had any problems with the rain water and it’s south facing in full sun you can get water drops on outside of lens when wind is blowing at the doorbell while it’s raining and I’ve not got rain cover .i wouldn’t unless you have a problem with the sun blocking you view

It should be fine if it’s internals are getting wet there must be a crack in the case somewhere because they are sealed well

In my experience in the field of electronics, there’s no such thing as water proof. There should be a rain hood provided.
Further more, with regards to optics the hoods prevent glare from the sun and over exposure
