Notifications at Night

Until recently I received notifications according to the setting in Notification Settings of “Person Alert” ie if a Person/Human was detected a video would be recorded and I would receive a notification. If there was motion but no person then the video was recorded but no notification was sent.

Recently, I have been receiving notifications in the middle of the night because amongst other things the cameras (situated outside) had detected a cat, a gecko, a moth and almost every morning (really early) a bird.

When I raised this with Eufy Support I was informed that the system had been changed to send notifications at night time for all motion because the AI system was not always able to detect a Person/Human. It looks like night time starts at 5pm and goes until 5 or 6 am.

Apparently this new feature was introduced because of user demand. I have had my system for well over a year and never had a problem with person/human identification. I’m not sure how this “demand” was determined.

When we were robbed over a year ago (the reason for the system but after the event unfortunately) the police told us that most break ins happen during the day not at night. If person identification doesn’t work at night then presumably it wouldn’t work during the day either. If person identification is not sufficiently reliable then perhaps it should be removed completely.

Eufy seem to have no interest in changing the system back to use what is specified in the Notifications.

I don’t know whether I should turn my phone off at night and risk being murdered in my bed or leave it on and be woken most nights by a moth! Surely I am not the only person experiencing this.

What do you think?

That don’t sound right. If someone wanted all motion at night then they would have picked that option not have it automatically switch for you. Wonder who are these people who wanted this?? Not seen anyone on this forum asking for it. Should be able to get what notifications you want.

Wonder how this updated on the cams or is the A.I run from their servers.

Which cams have you got?

In Device Info the Model No. is eufyCam.

After receiving a reply to my initial query which was not really an answer I escalated the issue and received the following reply:

This is Angela, the Eufy Customer Support Manager.

Nice to hear from you. Sorry to hear that the issue returns after yesterday’s system update. Currently, the A.I facial detection still can’t be detected with 100% accuracy. As a result, you still will receive all notification in the evening. Please know that our engineer is working very hard to optimize this feature on the next coming firmwares. But it takes time to optimizes. Please be patient and wait for the next firmware update to see if it make any difference.

Please understand that this is not really a quality-related issue just different user has different demand for the notification. Most of our users want to receive all notifications in the evening. We will always optimize our product according to our user’s needs.

Innovation is never easy, and we are glad to have your support and understanding, which would be a huge encouragement for us to seeking continuous improvement. Thank you again.

Please let us know if there is anything else we can do for you.

Regards."

When I then queried the info provided and emphasised that I wasn’t using facial detection but was using person detection I received this second message:

Thanks for your response and information, sorry for the delayed response.

"I apologize for the misunderstanding that may be caused by the last email. All I want to tell you is that inaccurate A.I facial detection is part of the reason causes false recording. In the evening, even you choose the person alerts, the camera will still send your notification of motion detected if there is a moving object (non-human) that triggers the camera and saved a video, this is how the camera works now. That is why you get notifications in the evening when the cat or bird trigged the camera.

I totally understand that you don’t want to get bothered by a cat and bird during the evening, what your want is to let this system secure your home’s safety, especially during the evening.

What you said is reasonable that including a parameter in the app to specify that when a user sets the system to only send alarms/notifications when a person is detected that this is to apply 24 hours a day and not just during daylight hours. I will forward it to our software team and they will further consider its availability in the future firmware upgrade. But, I have to say that currently, the system can’t work as you expected.

Again, I apologize for any trouble and inconvenience this has caused. If there is anything else I can do for you, please don’t hesitate to let me know.

Have a nice day!"

So only get human detection during the day? They need advertise that. I wouldn’t want the cam to record everything at night as the battery would run down so fast.

I’ve got the doorbell so this does not do that.

I’m impressed by the response email. It wasn’t the result you wanted but it was clear and not dismissive of your concerns.

Camera AI doesn’t work as well during low light or at night as it does during the day. Eufy Security has this set up so that everything will be recorded at night. Wouldn’t you rather be safe than sorry about this? What would happen if someone was on your property but the AI didn’t tag it as a person? No event video for you… this is why Eufy has this. Human Detection does work at night and will still tag people as people but because AI doesn’t work as well at night it’s not a guarantee that it will tag every person as a person at night.

OOF. This is making me want to return my cameras. Nighttime human only is a MUST for me. It’s a big reason why I bought this thing.

My goal was to have the siren go off with detection when I’m away and/or at night (just set to “away” if need be). If I’m not home, I want the siren to scare off the intruder when I can’t be there.

Can you imagine using that setting when the siren will be going off every time a rabbit hops by? A neighbourhood cat (which is how I learned that there’s no human only at night)? Imagine waking up the neighbours repeatedly for that? Why even have the auto-siren option with motion of you can’t chose “Human Only”?

Ugh, what a disappointment.

Just let us CHOOSE. Make the current setup the default all you want, Eufy! But let us CHOOSE otherwise!!

They can’t do it, plus there will be no comment from Eufy.

What about @Mengdi do you know anything about this problem?
