how do you get solicitors to stop bugging you? I felt the police knock was quite startling.

No. I’m not trying to sell you anything. I am imposing!
You could try taping a no soliciting sign on your door, it works for me about 80% of the time. Some will see it and then just walk away, but forget about those Jehovah witnesses I don’t think they can read… And they show up always early in the morning.
It’s their job to be persistent
They are so annoying 
I tell them politely no thanks but they are so persistent and make me mad
