Why is Eufy not addressing the downed server issue!?

Simply haveing local storage is a far cry from ensuring you have access to it all the time. All that means is that your video doesn’t need to leave your home when being recorded.

The problem with local storage is that you still need a mechanism to authenticate access to it, and get through network security equipment to get to it. Then when you add the ability to share it and have multiple users it gets even more complicated. If you don’t have those things then you have situations like we had a few years back where IP cameras were on the web and anyone could see your video. No one wants to have that feeling that they have no privacy becaue the camera is on the internet for the world to watch. That is why conditions like this occur even with local storage.

FYI You can use the RTSP functionality on some of the camaeras to get close to this enablement and make video avaliable at any time, but security on that RTSP setup isn’t present. You would want to have something like a Raspberry PI or another computer providing the storage and being a front end to enable the access.

Come on guys! They can easily come on the forum to communicate. I take that back they do answer on the forum when it’s concerning wanting to see new products or when there is a sale to be made. Scan the posts you will see what I am talking about.

Dear eufy backers,

All the issue has been fixed. If you still have same problems, please contact support@eufylife.com.

The video data does encrypt and save on local HomeBase. Video data streams directly from HomeBase to your phone.

Nowadays, remote access is mandatory for most people. We developed the architecture starting from this demand.
The App relies on the server as an address book to find the HomeBase and locate the video.

The key concern here is whether the video data is uploaded to the cloud.
No, videos are not uploaded.

If you would like to know more, a simple test could help you understand. Once the App allocates the video and you start playing one of them, you may unplug the Internet cable of the router. This cuts your camera system from Internet. You will find your phone can still playback the next couple videos because the video is transmitted directly from HomeBase to the phone.

Thank you @Mengdi for your reply

Are you saying when Eufy servers are down that we can unhook the home base unit from our router and the home base will connect directly to the app and play recorded events? How is that possible?

It looks like he is saying that the Eufy server is needed to intiate access to the Homebase, or wifi camera. Once that initial connection is established you can watch he content without without being logged in.

His statement just re-enforces what has already been said about the need for Eufy servers. Unless you are already watching the stream when their servers go down you can’t start a new connection. One thing he has corrected though is that your content doesn’t go through Eufy servers like a proxy if you are on the local network.

For the future, Eufy should learn that communication is part of the product. My neighbor and I spent way too much time trying to figure this out when a simple email could have sent out. I have dismantled and returned my cameras and sensors. Perhaps later, I will revisit Eufy but for now I will let the company grow up a little more.

On behalf of Eufy Security let me first apologize for our lack of communications. The team has been busy through yesterday and the night fixing a server-side issue. This doesn’t change the fact that we haven’t responded in a timely manner with updates and the big question: why did it happen! This isn’t cool. And we know it.

To make matters worse, these same server issues impacted our customer service systems. This meant that many who attempted to contact us got no help.

The good news, everything is back up and running, and as you can see, the server issues did not impact video recording and storage. But the server-side issue did impact the apps ability to negotiate with devices and view videos.

We promise we will improve and enhance our system and to help avoid “down time” issues like this in the future if a server does go down.

In the meantime, again, we are sorry and promise to do better!

Thank you for acknowledging the lack of communication and our frustration with the “radio silence” from Eufy.
Honestly that was my main concern and frustration with this whole thing, that Eufy couldn’t be bothered to tell us there was an issue on their side and they were working on fixing it.
A simple “we’re aware, and we’re on it!”
Because we all waisted too much time trying to figure it out on our ends.
Thank you for your response and I am hopeful that Eufy has learned from this inncodent and communicate with its costumers will be of higher priority moving forward.
I do like the idea behind Eufy and have enjoyed my security products and services before this point.

I understand the need of Eufy’s server for the initial handshake. But why can’t we have direct local access to the homebase like the basic camera I have sitting on a ledge watching my front door. That camera allows me to connect to it via IP address on a browser if I’m on the same LAN. But uses their server for the initial handshake when using their app to connect either on LAN or outside the network.

Let us have this feature and your product would be solid. And would not be falsely telling us everything is local. It’s current not as we still need your server!

Just curious (I haven’t tried this myself yet) can you remove the memory card and insert into a card reader/laptop and view/download the recordings that way? Or would it ask to be reformatted and thus delete everything.

Down again??

Yep! It’s down again on my end too.
Same as before, l can’t view our record events, but someone just rang the doorbell and we got that notification.

Down again for me too :weary:

Looks like it’s back up again, but I’m missing at least 3 recorded events from today.
One of them was someone ringing the doorbell and the other 2 were of a person leaving and coming back to the house.
I recieved a notification of all 3 events, but they are not in my recordings from today…
I hope it’s just an issue of them still working on stuff and I didn’t lose the recordings for good.

It’s sort of working now but cameras no longer appear in HomeKit. I tried adding them back and they work for a bit and then drop again. Unbelievable.

P.S. My HomeKit has many devices from over a dozen of manufacturers. I’ve never had a device just disappear from HomeKit. Not once, ever.

Down again, then up. Eufy responded to my inquiry over Twitter, which was actually in regards to the June 12 outage, but anyway, here’s their response:

“ Our servers were experiencing some issues but we are getting reports from our product team that servers are slowly coming back up online. Please refresh your app from time to time as you should soon reconnect to the app and video events. Thank you for your patience!”

Because they don’t own their infrastructure and rely on a rented IaaS cloud solution instead. And instead of focusing their efforts on giving us local access like their premised on kickstarter, they are more concerned on making money by exclusively signing partners to sell their services.
