Can you record events without having the ongoing notification as they occur? It is too disruptive to my work. I’m ready to return this equipment if I can not turn it off. It gives me an audio signal even when my volume is decreased to zero.

Just turn off notifications for the app, you can also set a notification to silent so it makes no sound. If you don’t know how to ask Mr. Google
You can change the type of notification in settings in the app. But you may need to adjust your phone’s notification settings to silent or set up do not disturb…
