Night vision range expectations?

Hello,

I just got an outdoor C24 to look over our driveway and approaching road, mounted high above from our upstairs window exterior. In the darkest parts of the night, a halo effect reflection appears.

I understand this is from the IR LEDs and I initially tried to remount it etc to avoid reflections, but last night I dismounted it and just held it into the night with nothing around it, and still had the same effect.

I also held one of our indoor P24 cameras into the night as a comparison (attached pic). Although the P24 has no halo, it has even less definition and is mainly a blur.

I also suspected a C24 hardware fault, but tested it on closer range night scenes, and it was fine (no halo).

The Eufy website mentions night vision to have a range of 3-5 meters.

  • Am I therefore expecting too much from the C24 at night?

Perhaps in the absence of light, the lens is trying to be as sensitive as possible and picking up only the IR residual?

Its not too much of a concern, as the requirement is mainly for it to film in day time, plus at night, with any car headlight or triggered security light, the halo dramatically lessens and the detail returns.

I mainly want help in determining whether I have a faulty unit.

This is a tough one. With the testing / troubleshooting you performed and what you had written does make it difficult to determine if it is a faulty camera. The image you provided makes it appear as if the IR is reflecting humidity / fog back to the camera or moisture on the lens.
I would try a replacement C24 camera to rule it out.

Thank you for your suggestion. I have a second C24 on order now and will hopefully see if there is a difference.

Please do Post back if the issue was resolved or not.
Thanks.

The new C24 arrived and shows the first one to be faulty. Side by side testing test screenshot attached.

Interesting that I, and most others wouldn’t realise a flaw was present if not testing at range, as regular closer scenes are fine. However I added this camera specifically for a greater scene night view, so extremely pleased this is now sorted.

Thanks again for your suggestion.

Excellent! That’s a big difference in screenshots. Couldn’t tell you had a fence there before.
